Feminist zine workshop at Vrouwendag

On Friday November 11th I will teach a feminist (mini)zine workshop at the Vrouwendag event in Brussels. Vrouwendag is the National Women’s Day that has been organised in Belgium since 1972. It takes place in another city every year and this year Brussels and the venue De Kriekelaar (near Nord station) are its host.

Zines and postcards for International Women’s Day

Forget giving flowers or jewellery on Women’s Day! It’s a day to celebrate, remember, and plot feminist struggles after all! It’s a day to go on strike, organise, and educate yourself and others. And why not a day to read feminist zines and send postcards?

By the way, for March 8th I have some news to share about my solo music project Lost Luna too… Read on:

New zine: Same Heartbeats #15

Same Heartbeats #15 is out now!

This zine was presented in “avant-premiere” at Swindon Zine Fest & North West Zine Fest, and is now available for mail-order!

Same Heartbeats is the feminist perzine series I’ve been making since 2006. Inside I document my travels to zine fests, Ladyfests, and other DIY/queer/feminist events, write about topics such as body hair, (non)femininity, music, archiving, and self-publishing, interview other DIY creatives, and publish comics featuring Chainsaw Bunny or my band Lavender Witch (and my old band Vagina Dentata).

So what can you find inside this 15th issue?

The zine combines text, drawings, comics, collage, and photography. This issue is 36 pages in A5 size including the front and back cover. It’s printed on recycled paper and bound with red yarn.

<- I fold and bind all the zines by hand – this is time-consuming but a labour of love.

New zine: YngWHO?

YngWHO? – a fanzine about growing up in the 80s, queerness, fandom, and Yngwie Malmsteen

My new zine YngWHO? talks about a lot of things, so you don’t need to be a fan or even have heard of Yngwie Malmsteen. I didn’t know who he was before last summer… (He’s a guitarist who started out in the 80s and supposedly invented neoclassical rock/metal). But because I became a fan over the summer, I decided a zine was in order and I used it to write about a number of subjects.

Even though I call YngWHO? a fanzine, it’s as much a perzine*. It’s written from a fan perspective and I write about fandom as well as about personal things like memories from the 80s and gender stuff.

What can you find in this zine?

  • all things Yngwie, including how I discovered his music, what we can learn from him, and reasons to hate him (yep)
  • thoughts about fandom and fame
  • thoughts about queerness, gender expression, and the 80s
  • film / book / zine recommendations
  • and also… a poster, a puzzle, and a paper doll! 🙂

The zine is 32 pages, in A5 format. The cover is printed on coloured paper, the inside pages on recycled paper, and it’s bound by yellow yarn.

For sale: 2 euros + postage
Trades welcome!

*perzine is short for personal zine, a zine focusing on personal/autobiographical content, while a fanzine is about (a) subject(s) that the author is a fan of, is passionate about, or simply likes a lot.

New zine: Same Heartbeats #14

Same Heartbeats #14 is out!

The new issue of my feminist perzine* Same Heartbeats has just rolled off the printers! Number 14 is my lucky number, so it must be a good one? 🙂

As usual, this is a text-heavy zine but with lots of drawings and photos too. It’s printed on recycled paper and hand-bound with pink yarn (because I associate baby pink with the number 14 – it’s a synesthesia thing…).

Curious to know what this zine is about? Read on…

What can you find in this issue?

  • Interviews with Emca and Asia, two friends who are active in various ways in the DIY scene and share their experiences, thoughts, and memories
  • A comic about manspreading
  • Looking back at my trip to the UK visiting Leeds Zine Fair, Pen Fight shop and other fun places in Manchester and Leeds.
  • A fan rant about Yngwie Malmsteen (written at the highlight of my fan obsession – be warned! 😀 )
  • The further adventures of Lavender Witch including the first concerts we played
  • Reflections on the various zine events that I participated in recently
  • Remembering all the prize draws I ever won
  • An easy vegan lasagna recipe
  • A poem / lyrics about nostalgia

36 pages in A5 size.

What people said about Same Heartbeats?:

  • Same Heartbeats was mentioned in an article Arte Y Cultura Visual about contemporary zines made by women, among such great zines as Culture Slut and Fight Boredom:
“Same Heartbeats, de la artista e importante activista feminista belga Nina…”
  • The British newspaper Morning Star reviewed my zines:
“In Same Heartbeats, anarcho-feminist Nina shines a light on activism and self-publishing in her native Belgium and across Europe. Her long-running personal zine has just celebrated its 10th anniversary and in it she champions the DIY communities which fight discrimination, host gigs that push women to the forefront and celebrates being feminist and being queer, while also challenging notions of women’s bodies and identities. As well as publishing her comic-led zines, Nina also runs a punk tape label and she draws inspiration from, and carries the torch for, the riot-grrrl scenes of the 1990s.”
  • At the indie music website Indiestyle you can read:
“Uiteraard met een feministisch activistische insteek vind je in dit gevarieerde magazine zowel vlot verteerbare, luchtig gebrachte verslagen van Ladyfests en andere bijeenkomsten als uitgebreide interviews en zwaardere, goed gedocumenteerde en beargumenteerde maatschappelijke artikels terug. Daarnaast wordt het geheel nog opgesmukt met onder andere een aantal nuttige tips & tricks en een heleboel uitmuntende illustraties.”
  • Zinester Hadass Badass wrote some super sweet things:
“Nina (aka Zina) makes a slew of amazing zines and comics through her indie publication project Echo. […] She writes a pretty awesome zine called Different Heartbeats about feminism, punk shows, zine fests, DIY projects, and more. […] I recently wrote her an email telling her that I wish I had half of her skills in comics, and that her art simply inspires me to try and create more of my own. Amazing talent, great sense of humor, endless inspiration, a feast for the eyes, and pure fun! I highly highly recommend you check it out!”
  • And even legendary punk zine Maximumrocknroll wrote a review of Same Heartbeats:
“This is a really cool feminist zine outta Belgium that reminds me of radical zines from the ’80s and early ’90s, pre riot grrrl. Nina wants a feminist revolution, and this booklet details that fact in detail from a historical perspective covering feminist rock collectives of the ’70s that sprang from the women’s lib movement, and from a perspective of a radical feminist that is trying figure out how her actions can bring about change now… The drawings sort of look like the illustrations on early Raincoats records, so it has this nostalgic early ’80s feel, including the language and pro-collective building styles of feminism she espouses. There’s even writing in here against academic/theoretical feminism, interesting, not sure I agree, but Nina is writing for the people not the ivory tower. I enjoyed reading this, and would recommend it for any feminist readers looking for solidarity…”
